  Q. canon or sigma lens

Asked by Amna Al Shamsi    (K=21795) on 4/25/2004
Hello friends,

Currently am using Canon EOS 300d , I got 2 lenses the 18-55 mm and the 90-300 mm all canon brand . I heard sigma lenses are compatible with the EOS. Did any one try it? Is it the same quality as canon lenses? I know it is cheaper and basically sometimes am having some problems in finding the lens I want from canon (stock problem in my area) , sigma is available on the other hand??any advice?

Hi Amna, Yes Sigma do make lenses with Canon mounts.

I have recently got a 12-24 W/A Zoom for my D10
and am impressed with it because it is such fun to use.

I have seen several critical reports on this lens but I believe that used sensibly it will do all that is asked of it.

Hi Amna,

It is almost always better to stick with your camera's brand name lenses. They are usually more expensive, but are better quality and suited better for the camera.

Amna, I personally have good expirience with Sigma lenses, but heard that some falks who used Canon cameras complained about Sigma lenses. You can talk to Ganeshwar Prasad about this issue, he may have lot of info about it for you.

Hello!
Sigma makes great lenses. Some are even better than Canon?s or Nikon?s in optical quality. Canon lenses are better at the mechanical level, but if you dont need a very fast autofocus Sigma is an excelent choice. The EX lenses from sigma are as good (or even better) than Canon?s L series (and half of the price).
Photo reporters usualy have Canon L series lenses because of the realy fast autofocus and Image Stabilization, but if you don?t need that go for Sigma.

Hi Amna. I have just purchased the Sigma 12-24m/m F4.5 Zoom. This equates to 19-38.4m/m on my D10.

I have read conflicting reports on this lens but confess that I am very happy with it. See recent post-Te Anau Morn.

It is a lot slower than some of the Canon w/a Canon lenses but the exta width at 12m/m is well worth while.

Hi Amna, I got a whole bunch of shoots with my 300D and Sigma lenses. I've got the 15-30 EX and 28-300 Hyperzoom which are very practical for daily use (imagine, from 28 mm standard to 300 zoom in one lense, and it's quite cheap!) and they works perfectly. I've heard about some guys complaining about Error 99 on their digital camera when conneced to Sigma lenses, but so far, thank God, I haven't had one. So my suggestion is if you can get the Sigma, good price, perfect specification, and works on your camera, grab it! Good luck!
