Q. Head compatability

Hi all great site...
I just bought a Velbon "Sherpa" 250n which came with a pan head and wondered how many other brands of Head are compatible with my Tripod.

I don't think you can remove the head from that 'pod so you can't fit another one.

For detachable heads there's pretty much a world standard which means you can fit pretty much any of them on any tripod.

If you unscrew the pan head it has a standard 6mm thread? (the same size thread will fit a camera tripod mount on the base of the body of the camera) but I think you inadvertently answered my question. I just wondered whether all tripods had the same head mounting screw if you know what I mean.....

there are 2 standard threads for fixing cameras to tripods and the same 2 are commonly used for fixing the head to the tripod legs. the smaller fitting common on 35mm cameras is 1/4x20, the larger size is 3/8x18. interesting that both of these are american SAE standard threads and not metric. since the threaded sections are short, and the fit is pretty sloppy, an M6 will usually fit the smaller, and M10x1.5 will work for the larger. most bogen/manfrotto and gitzo tripods use the 3/8x18 thread to attach heads to the tripods and offer plates or platforms with either size for the camera attachment because they don't know if you are using a small camera, or medium format. there are bushings made to go between the different sizes if you need to fix a head with the larger hole to a tripod with a smaller thread, but to go the other way the adaptor is a little more bulky and raises the platform about an inch.
