  Q. Which Canon flash?

Asked by Ian Hunter    (K=1673) on 11/6/2004
I have a Canon Powershot G5 and I am intending to buy a Canon Speedlite flash and diffuser to improve my indoor/portrait shots. I understand the 220/420/550EX would all be compatible but I am unsure of the difference (except price!) between the three. I would very much appreciate it if someone could explain the key aspects of each for me.

hi Ian, it occurs to me that you are asking the wrong question, may be you should think about what you actually want to achieve, having a brand new flash won't inherently help you take better portraits, in fact any on camera flash is not the ideal

what about natural light and fast film? what about off camera flash and bounce/umbrella techniques? what about environmental portraiture and fill flash techniques? what about ...?

good photography is more about concept and technique than equipment

Ian - the Canon Website says that the 420EX is approx. 1/2 a stop less powerful than the 550 EX - it also isn't as controlable - IE the 550 has more options for settings. the 220 is nice but less powerful still.
