  Q. Camera Specific - Nikon 8008 Camera question
Bob Jarman
Asked by Bob Jarman    (K=3145) on 1/28/2002
I have a dive buddy who has two 8008 cameras for a housing. He has lost his manual and the other camera was bought used.

Here is the issue we were trying to solve:

On both cameras when in P mode or S mode, the top dial when rotated will either shift the program, or will change the selected shutter speed and alter the display. In Aper. priority, with a lens (60mm micro in this case) on the camera, the display on the top lcd panel says f/45. It doesn't change with either the dial on the camera or when he rotates the aprerture ring on the lens.

I dont use Nikon all that much, but I thought that when in Aperture priority, the f-tstop is set by the aperture ring, and that you lock the ring in to the highest number (the orange one on the lens) when you want to shoot P or S mode. The question is really why would his LCD display on the top of the camera not show the F-stop he has set his camera to while in Aperture Priority mode?

Hope that makes sense. I would appreciate any help. I told him I seriously doubted the camera was broken, it didn't make sense that both would have the exact same problem

Hi Bob,

I have this camera (or, rather, an 8008s). What you're describing is not normal, as you suspected. The first thing I'd try is a different lens. It seems that the camera thinks the lens is on its smallest aperture.

As an aside, it sounds like the lens was focused on its closest distance, as the camera takes into account the loss of light due to extension on Micro (Macro) lenses. I believe the smallest _marked_ aperture is f/32 but I'm not sure about this.

If another lens isn't available, try cleaning the contacts on the lens (the springy bumps) and on the camera.

Might the lens have been exposed to saltwater spray? There may be some corrosion on the contacts.
