  Q. Image Quality when enlarging images on computer compared to actually making a Print.

Asked by Chris Whaley    (K=3847) on 9/28/2001
I have noticed lately that when I enlarge some of my pictures on my computer screen the quality (film grain, clarity) for a screen filling image looks very good. Will this quality relate to a print done on a photo printer or one made at the photolab?

No because of many factors, the main one is the dynamic range your monitor is capable of displaying is larger than the range of a reflected print. A real world example is looking at a slide through a light box vs a print of the same slide, the slide always looks more vibrant.

Also just to note, most seem to like the look of transmitted light much better than reflected light. Monitors are transmitted light, as are slides, when projected or viewed on a light table. Transmitted light, to me, has a certain "glow" to it, that simply cannot be reproduced by a print.

(just my 2 cents)
