  Q. DSLR's

Asked by Phillip Filtz   Donor  (K=1792) on 3/1/2002
OK, I need some info. Who shoots what type of DSLR's? What type of work do you shoot, outdoors, studio, macro, etc...? What do you like or don't like about them? What size prints can you get from them without alot of PS work?

Any info will be appreciated...

Did you read joe's article in the article section?

Yep, read it a while back as a matter of fact. Nice article.

dont you use a S1? without interpolation methods, you'd be hard pressed to go past 11x14 ...

I've been using a D1x (borrowed), but have not printed to 11x14 yet ... but that seems to be the accepted maximum

Yep, I have an S1. I don't shoot at the highest settings the camera will deliver. I shoot at fine/3040. I have 3 16x20's in my studio all of which came from the S1. I just ordered a new Nikon 35-70 2.8 af lens for it.

I think the colours that the S1 produces without allot of PS is great. The reason for the post is that I'm thinking of getting another DSLR. I was curious as to what other owners of DSLR's have, and what do they like and don't like about them.

I presently looking at the new Sigma SD9 and Kodak 760.

Regards,

Hate to ask silly questions but, if you aren't using the highest capabilities you have now, why would you upgrade?

I also have an S1, it is a great camera but does have some drawbacks. I cannot use the auto focus with the AF-I and AF-S lenses, that hurts in shooting sports. I do use it quite a bit in the studio and have found it to work great for product shots and as a proofer instead of wasting polaroids to verify initial lighting setups. Another thing that would be nice is if it had a setting for ISO 100 as 320 is as low as it goes, I have to set it to 400 and use a .6 ND filter to bring it down to the film speed I use.

As far as new cameras go, I would get either the new Nikon D100 or the Fuji S2, they are both build around the N80 and work with the AF-I and AF-S lenses so that problem is handled, plus i think one of them goes down to ISO 100, The Nikon is supposed to be priced cheaper than the Fuji so will be interesting to see exactly what they sell for. The D100 also has a Bulb position so that would make for some interesting digital timed exposures.

Terrance, using the highest setting on the S1 only interpolates the digital info. It went from producing 2 meg .jpg files to 18 meg .tiffs with "no" real apparent benefit from the printing side, or at least that's what I saw.

I like the colours that the Fuji S1 produces. I'm a bit concered about the D100 since Nikon had problems with the D1 with regard to colours. Anyway, I'm just exploring other cameras for either backup or primary.

Thankx
