  Q. PHOTOJOURNALISM and PATHOS

Asked by ken krishnan    (K=19102) on 8/27/2004
This image posted today - promted this response from me,

"I don't think this little girl is a begger - SHE IS DOING SOMETHING TO EARN a living.

Sad indeed to see little angels had to do these things at their age.

I think everyone of us should choose some charity and do what ever we could to help".

Child abuse, child poverty, Child labour does exist in our so called beautiful world(mainly a WESTERN WORLD).

I am a donor for few charities - Sight Savers, Concern, African aid, etc. I spend about 50 euros/month to donate. Its not much but goes a long way in poor countries.

I would appeal to all the good UF members to choose some charity of their preference and donate something. It might be just 5 dollars/euros. It will make a BIG difference to a child like this one.

If my appeal makes a slightest diffrenc to a child, then I would consider STREET PHOTOJOURNALISM has worked. Photojournalism is not simply about PATHOS of the image. Its about REAL people.

regards,
ken.

I can certainly agree with your statement about doing what we can. Speaking photographically however, throughout the history of photography practitioners of photojournalism have been hoping that their images could move people to take action. I'm not sure that it has been effective. The greats ? Eric Salamon, Henri Cartier Bresson, Gene Smith, Edie Adams, Mary Ellen Mark and so many others ? have tried to alter the course of history for the better. Maybe the world is just a little better for their efforts. I would like to think so.
