You are right, though no cameras seemed to exist then. A lot of great artist use cameras today for reference. I imagine that those artists used drawings for refence. They were real masters though. Imagine trying to memorize the color range in the photo attached.

They were making paintings using a camera as an aid. Do some research on the "camera obscura". Da Vinci mentions the camera in his notebooks. Researchers have discovered in some of Vermeer's paintings lens defects painted in. For a excellent overview of the subject see: David Hockney's, "Secret Knowledge - rediscovering the lost techniques of the old masters." BTW, this subject is usually discussed in most art/photo history 101 classes.
