  Q. Fuji NPS 160
brian daws
Asked by brian daws    (K=3376) on 4/24/2003
I have just bought 2 packs of the Fuji NPS film and am wondering how to regard its speed for gauging exposure..it is rated at iso160 but my particular meter only gives iso125 or iso200..it is colour negative film, should I under or over expose it?The camera I am using is a Mamiya M645 1000s, any comments on this camera welcomed as I am new to MF and am still wondering if I made a wise choice, regards, Brian

Set it to 125, neg likes a tad of over exposure, but now if you tended to over expose neg film you now have to try and expose it correctly ( or to the effect you want )

Brian,

It won?t hurt to over expose it a bit. Most print film I over expose by stop or two as the exposure range of film can handle it. This makes it much better to scan and make prints from, do not do this with slide film.

set it to 200 and close half a stop of what your meter says, that should give you the ?right? exposure. Also you can overexpose half a stop and you will get more colour from neg film.
good luck,
Walter

Buy a different meter!

I use NPS 160 at ASA 125. IMO, the colors seem more natural and more pastel (if you like that)

Hi Brian,
Fuji NPS 160 is not an ordinary negative film. It has low to moderate contrast, its very sharp and it has little moody responses to exposure changes(specially under exposure). That means; being accurate with this film, you will get maximum from it. S in NPS, means short exposure(less than 1/10 sec), and that the purpose this film was made for. But if you can tolerate moderate blue shift in color; you can even use it for longer than 1 sec exposures. It may be the best for portrate photography.
Use ISO125 on your exposure meter and be accurate.
Goodluck.

It's wonderful film for overcast weather or shady environment, then I'd expose in up on 200ASA, however if you tend to like sunny weather and high-contrast photo, better set it down to 125 and so do expose it. Cheers, D.
