  Q. Macro Lens for Yashica Mat 124G

Asked by Betsy Hern    (K=12872) on 8/10/2003
Anyone know where I can get this lens (I've found nothing on ebay) or if I can substitute another?

If you can find a "proxar" or similar close-up diopter in an appropriate diameter or bayonet fitting, that is as good as you are going to do. there were add on lenses for wide angle, tele and close-up, made for most of the TLR cameras by various people over the years. most of them were expensive and rare now, or were cheap then and are still cheap. the problem with trying to use a TLR for macro work is the parallax. mamiya made a gadget the you attached to a tripod called a Paramender that was supposed to allow you to focus and do your setup with the camera lowered on this thing, then after you were happy with the setup, you raised it on this device and it moved exactly the distance between the lenses, placing the taking lens where the viewing lens was. if everything else stayed the same, then you would get what you were looking at on the ground glass. these are a must have device for attemtping macro work on a TLR.

I would call up Perter's camera store and see if they still have anything like the old add-on lenses for TLR cameras, a call to KEH or B&H photo's used department is also worth a try. if both of those bomb, Bill Cameta's camera, and Brooklyn camera exchange, have a lot of vintage and obsolete stuff. all of these vendors can be found in shutterbug magazine.

Thanks so much for your prompt answer, Charles, I guess you were up as late at night as I was (or you're an early riser)! I will pursue all the options you've listed. This is exactly the kind of info I was looking for and I can always count on someone here for the inside scoop. I'm really enjoying this camera and if I can come up with a close-up lens my outfit will be complete, for awhile.

i just noticed a major typo... that is not perter's it is Porters Camera

http://www.porters.com/ just a quick search just showed me a tele lens accessory kit for the chinese TLR cameras and an adaptor that lets you put mor normal size filters on a Bay1 bayonet mount like the rollei and better japanese cameras used.

one warning about oversize filter adaptors is that they will only fit the taking lens OR the viewing lens. so you have to move the filterfrom one to the other, it slows down work considerably and depending on the adaptor, sometimes it is dificult to get directional accessories like polarizers and ND filters in the right place. the real advantage to them in my view is that they allows you to use common sized inexpensive commodity filters and accessories on your.

Thanks again for all your help Charles, you really know your stuff. I took a look at all the sources you mentioned and wandered off in all directions when I was on the Porters site (it is now bookmarked and I will go back again). I was ready to buy the lens accessory kit then decided to check ebay one more time where I found a set of Yashinon auxilliary lenses made by Yashica for the Yashicamat 124G. The matched pairs of viewing and taking lenses are a Bayonet 30 size, hooray! I'm high bidder now for what I think is a reasonable price. Auction ends in 2 days so I have my fingers crossed.
