  Q. RB67 50mm lens - DOF

Asked by Iain Burgess    (K=97) on 8/28/2003
Hi, I've been wondering about my RB67 50mmC lens, I find that it for the majority of photos, I am have the bellows right in, and only for objects closer than 1m do I have to start adjusting the bellows out, it also seems to be able to focus down to about 100mm from a subject and still be pin sharp. Even at f4.5, it still has plenty of DOF, and I can only make us of limiting DOF in close-ups. I'm not saying its wrong, it certainly makes landscapes easy, at f32, everything is in focus, not need to check.

Is this a natural thing for a lens of this nature, or did the previous owner adjust/modify something to get this effect.

The reson I'm asking is that I regularly use a limited DOF for effect in figure studies, and whilst I find the 50mm lens is very useful in really elongating the legs when shooting at the correct angle, everything in the frame stays sharp, whilst what I really want is a selected amount of focus. Compared to the 90mm C lens and 180mm C I can limit the focus planes and my favorite 250mm lens were I can be very careful with the limited DOF, I can get small parts of the body pin sharp whilst bluring the rest.

Iain, The DOF of the 50mm is what you should be getting. For Medium Format, this is a very "short" lens - the equivalent of about a 35mm lens on a 35mm camera.

To get the limited DOF, you will need to go to the 90mm (a "normal" lens for the RB67), or higher. My favorite for the RB67 is the Mamiya 150mm Soft Focus. It comes with 3 inserts for varying the softness, or it can be shot without an insert.

The cost on a new 150 SF is quite high, though. (about $1800) I picked up a used one in excellent condition from a Dealer on e bay for $300.

Thanls Ron, I'm still learning the RB67 system, quite a change for my Minolta AF's.

I have a 140mm Macro, which I often use for figure study work, just about the right length for full length shots. I'll keep aneye on e-bay, and if there's a 150mmSF cgoing for the right price I'll have a go.
