Photography Forum: Medium Format Photography Forum:
  Q. double exposure capabilities

Asked by Amanda Peek    (K=119) on 6/2/2004
Hello.
My question is rather simple. Do you know of medium format camera models that are capable of double exposure?
I used my holga until the film advance wheel broke off (i need to buy some gorilla glue). I just want to know what medium format cameras are out there (that will hold up a little better) that will allow me to release the shutter several times before manually advancing the film.
Thanks
Amanda

Every MF camera I've ever used has been able to do multiple exposures, thos have all been MF slr's (mamiya, contax, bronica). Was there a specific camera or price range that you were concerned about seeing this feature in?

I suppose I am looking at $300 or less for the whole package. I just spoke to my father who said he has a "Mamiyaflex" he will let me try. Do you think this camera has multiple exposure capabilities?

I've not used the mamiya TLR's, but I would be surpised if it didn't do multiple exposures, and I'm sure someone else will have some good information about them. My understanding is they're quit good optically, and most (all?) have the ability to change lenses.

Many TLR's can do multiple exposure, in fact, you have to get used to not doing multipe exposure by mistake with them. Look for one that has a separate shutter cock and film advancer. Most Chinese TLR's, like Seagull, Pearl River...are like this, and they are a good value for the money. Also the often hated Kiev 88 falls within your price range, and has multiple exposure capabilities when the camera has a good day and has exposure capabilities at all.

Elder Rolleiflex'es TLR (not Automat) with Tessar lenses and Voigtlander Brilliant TLR (bakelite) with Heliar lenses are winnners in 100 - 200 $ price range.

The Bronica ETR series (6 x 6 format) will do multiple exposures as well. You can pick up the ETRC for around 300 bucks. The ETRSi or ETRS will probably be just a bit more expensive. I have the ETRC and my only frustration (and it's a small one) is that this is the only model that doesn't have interchangeable backs.

I did a triple exposure by accident with my Hassie. I did get my Hasselblad body on Ebay, it wasnt too much more than $200.
