  Q. mamiya 645 1000s

Asked by sean slavin    (K=3488) on 2/21/2004
an opportunity to buy a complete mamiya 645 1000s kit has presented itself to me but i don't know anything about this camera. the person selling it is a pro photographer and all of it is in excellent condition.

the kit would include: 645 1000s body, metering prism (w/ hot shoe), 80mm lens, 55mm lens, 210mm lens, 1 220 insert, 2- 120 film inserts, grip and a gear bag. he's asking $1100 for it.

does anyone have any experience with this camera? is this too good to pass up if i'm interested in making the jump into MF?

A great camera with great lenses, the price also seems to be correct. If Yuo want a reliable MF SLR system at a low cost, this is the way to go.

Lots of pros sell cameras like this now (thanks digital!), so not the last such chance in life, I'm afraid...

I used both this camera and the one immediately before it which, if I remember right, was called the 500, for years. It's a bit heavy and awkward to hold without the grip--the grip is a very useful addition. It was a bit heavy on batteries too (always take a spare with you) and I eventually got rid of mine because it becamse unreliable, sometimes either not firing or firing but keeping the shutter permanently open. If your contact has used it professionally for all these years, then I would say you are safe from the problem I encountered. Mamiya couldn't cure it although I sent it back two or three times. I loved the results I got with it. The 55mm lens was a real favourite (I tend to prefer WA lenses and this was a beauty).

Sean,

This is an old camera but still very useable in today world. Sounds like a good deal but you might want to check KEH for pricing to see what used 645 1000 are going for. www.keh.com

I have a m645 1000s. Mines an old clunker (probably saw more weddings than the priest before I got it) but it's pretty reliable other than my prism doesn't work properly (which I've never bothered to get fixed as I use a seperate meter) I have the L grip but never use it as I rarely hand hold it, but when I do I don't have any difficulties once you work out a comfortable hold where you can reach either shutter release. The price seems pretty good, but check around (also factor in that you can inspect this setup as opposed to buying blind... that's worth a few bucks to me) I only have the 80/2.8 and 150/4 lenses, both give excellent results. I'm always on the lookout for a bargain 55mm.. one day I'll get one.

I have the M645 non-1000s version. It's really a great toy to toss around and it's quite modular that you can carry around with you. I have a few images on here that was taken with the M645 with 80mm f/2.8.

Sean, I have nearly this same set-up except mine has the pd finder and I have the 150mm lens instead of the 210mm. The price of $1100 might be right at the top $ for this set. Worth it, if the camera and lenses are in excellent condition, but not a once-in-a-lifetime buy. Of course if it is local, it is worth a few extra bucks to avoid paying shipping and risking e-bay! I love my 645; a bit too much. I have been trying to wean myself off it and force myself to take the view camera into the field, but the darn 645 is just so much easier to use.
