  Q. Scanning 120 film on a flatbed.
dave thursfield
Asked by dave thursfield    (K=514) on 12/7/2004
I have an epson perfection 1650 Scanner, how can I use it to scan my 6x6 negs? Would I have to use the slide holder? Many thanks for your replies. Dave.

I thought the film adapter was optional for the 1650 and if you have it, you ought to have two 35 mm film adapters, one 120/220 adapter as well one for 4x5 large format. Reference guide here: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?cookies=no&oid=14552&infoType=Overview

I have a 1640 but I don't know if it's similar. I have a transparency adaptor hood which is a replacement lid with a inbuilt light source. It plugs into the scanner to talk to it. When scanning film, the scanner turns on this light and the main flatbed one off so the film is backlit. I use the holders that come with the scanner but you can scan on the glass, the DOF seems to be pretty good (you can also scan small objects and it shows that the DOF is more than you'd think)

Thanks Nigel, I will try. Yes the DOF is amazing, I have scanned all sorts of things to put on e-bay, Cameras, lenses, filters etc. Dave.

oohh.. i just thought of something. sort of in response to nigel.. my scanner neg carrier chops the negative border off so i can never get a true full frame scan (at most, just the very edge of the frame)

i had never thought to just not use the carrier and put the film right on the glass.. i could probably even make my own carrier and get the whole negative border! wooooo! can't wait to get home and try it now. (and yes, i suppose i'm a bit slow since i just now thought to try that. hehe)
