  Q. Medium format and a FLASH

Asked by Mark Jones    (K=458) on 12/31/2004
First I want to thank everyone who has commented regarding my step into MF photography, your comments have been very useful. I purchased a Mamiya 645E and it should arrive soon. My question to you all is that I know that the sync speed for flash is only 1/60 on this camera, but is it really necessary for it to be higher UNLESS youre shooting action or movement that requires you to "freeze" the subject? My photography will consist of mainly portrait and landscape work. Secondly, I have a Nikon SB-28 speedlite already, is there anyway this flash would work on the mamiya 645E? Are there manual settings? What are they?

The slow flash sync will be an issue with fill flash outdoors. If you have a lot of light and your meter suggests an exposure of 1/500 at f/8, you'll have a hard time with getting a proper exposure with fill flash. You'll need to stop down to f/32 (three stops) to get to 1/60 second exposure. Then your DOF will be much deeper and might not be what you want.

To add to what Adam is saying, one can use ND (neutral density/grey) filters to get the exposure down to the sync speed.
