  Q. Tent material

Asked by Karl Lautman    (K=0) on 11/13/2002
I'd like to build (rather than buy) a tent for photographing things without harsh shadows. Does anyone know the manufacturer and brand name of the material used in commercial tents for this purpose, where you put the object to be photographed inside the tent and shine lights on the outside? The material difuses the light. Also, if I use tungsten lights am I likely to need a tungsten filter, or does the material obviate the need for that (or necessitate another filter)? Thanks.

One company that makes them is called Redwing. Go to www.calumetphotographic.com and search their site for the Redwing Cocoon 70. Ofcourse, you could make your own diffusion panels from white rip-stop nylon and pvc pipe. You can check out www.lightingmagic.com. They make the panels, but they are kind of expensive. I made a 40"x40" diffuser panel from white nylon, attached elastic at the corners and made a frame from 1" pvc pipe and the pvc 90 degree corner pipes. Works fine for me.

Also if you require a large panel you can use a white nylon shower curtain. This can even be placed over an entire window for diffused sun light.
