  Q. Another filters question
Jim Johnson
Asked by Jim Johnson    (K=1025) on 6/1/2003
Thanks to everyone who answered my earlier question concerning filters. I will definitely look into those brands suggested.

I forgot to mention that these filters will be used with a digital camera, my first in fact, a Sony F717. I also forgot to ask one more question: Are there any differences in filter use between regular 35mm SLR's and digital's? Could I use any filters I purchase (with the correct thread size of course) on either type of camera, or are there significant differences between them that need to be considered before selecting filters?

As far as I know there is no difference. A filter is a filter.

Same here.. as far as I know.. no difference for digital or film.

Absolutely no difference whether you use a film or digital camera. Just follow the suggestions on selecting a quality filter. Remember that a low qulity filter will significantly impact the quality of the pictures.

The only problem could be if the digital camera makes its own white ballancing, but I doubt if any does it without the possibility of turning it off. With the white ballance, the effect of a simple color filter could be compensated again.

The other thing is that almost all work the filters do you can follow on computer. You can simulate the effect of color filters, gray gilters, even the graduated filters. I think that the only exception is a polarizing filter, which is very special among filters. So if you have a computer with a useful image manipulation SW, you almost do not need them.
