  Q. Digital SLR Standards

Asked by Antonio Cardoso    (K=479) on 7/27/2003
I have some excellent Nikon lenses for 35mm that I would like to use in a future digital Nikon body with 24x36mm capture device.
I'm just waiting.
Is it possible that such 24x36mm digital camera bodies may not be produced by Nikon? Also, they introduced more than one smaller format lens for present digital cameras like the D100. Is it a sign of no continuity of full 24x36mm format with digital technology?
Would Canon step back?
Am I making a big confusion with these informations?
Antonio

In the world of Digital cameras one thing is for sure, there are no standrds. Nikon will probably product a full frame sensor someday.

ALL Nikon lenses use the F mount. While the DX series are primarilly designed for their DSLRs I don't think there is anything that would prevent them from being used on regular ones.

Whether Nikon produces a fullframe DSLR will depend on the market.
Apparently the market isn't there (at least not at the price such a camera would cost) or they'd have done it already.

For the moment I'm waiting until the prices come down to within my budger range (meaning certainly below ?1500 for a body like the D100) at which point I will seriously consider buying one.

OK, The way I understand the problem to be is as follows. 35mm SLR lenses project the image in an arc. This is not a problem for film, as the emulsion side of the film does not reflect light that much, and will record the image data accurately. Digital sensors on the other hand, are shiny, so light has to strike the sensor perpendicular or very close to 90 degrees to the plane of the sensor. It is possible to make a full frame sensor, but the image would not be consistant from center to edges, light striking the outer areas of the sensor would be reflected instead of recorded resulting in darker areas around the edges of the frame.

Now, having said that, why can't they at least redesign the prism to display the full sensor area in the viewfinder? That would at least give you the impression that you are shooting full frame.

If you check out the DSLR's that are available, Kodak is currently producing a full frame DSLR built on a Nikon F5 body. The camera DCS PRO 14N uses all existing Nikon Auto focus lenses. Whether Nikon produces one in the next couple of years probably has a lot to due with legal agreements they signed with Kodak.
