CANON LAUNCHES NEW DR-9080C AND DR-6080 SCANNERS New Generation of DR-Series Scanners Offer Total High-Volume Performance Solutions LAKE SUCCESS, NY, September 10, 2003 ? Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon, Inc. (NYSE: CAJ), today unveiled the next generation of its award-winning DR scanner line with the introduction of the DR-9080C and DR-6080 ? bringing enhanced, high-speed production and total workflow solutions within reach for a wider range of high-volume users.
Starting at a U.S. suggested retail price of $9975 for the DR-9080C, and $7560 for the DR-6080, the new Canon scanners will begin shipping by November 2003.
Engineered to serve demanding, high-volume image capture applications, the new color DR-9080C performs duplex scanning at up to 90 pages per minute (ppm) in B/W or grayscale modes and up to 50 ppm in color, while the new DR-6080 scans in duplex up to 60 letter ppm in B/W or grayscale. When scanning letter-size documents in landscape mode, the DR-9080C can achieve speeds of up to 220 images per minute (ipm)*.
With a multitude of advanced features designed to offer dedicated, high-volume operators increased throughput, the performance of the DR-9080C and DR-6080 provides exceptional reliability, multiple document feed options and the ability to scan documents of different sizes in a single batch. Rated for six million scanning operations, both the DR-9080C and DR-6080 are designed for ease of maintenance and durability, and feature user-replaceable feed rollers.
The DR-9080C is a recipient of the Better Buys for Business "Editor's Choice" award in the upcoming Scan-to-File Guide. Both the DR-9080C and DR-6080 join the highly successful family of award-winning Canon DR-series scanners, which includes the color DR-2080C, the color DR-3080C and monochrome DR-3060. The new DR-9080C and DR-6080 also complement Canon's award-winning color DR-5080C and monochrome DR-5020 series, which offer simplex and duplex scanning at speeds up to 90 ppm**.
"Adding the DR-9080C and DR-6080 scanners to the high end of Canon's widely acclaimed scanner spectrum is clear testimony to our commitment to provide a broad range of scanning solutions that meet expanding customer needs," said Dennis Amorosano, director and assistant general manager of Canon Integrated Business Systems. "For years, businesses have equated our scanners with proven technology, value and reliable performance, and both new devices offer these customers even more reasons to select Canon scanners as part of their total imaging solution."
"In terms of features and speed, these scanners are both excellent machines. But when you look at the price and versatility of the DR-9080C, it's clear that the relatively slow-moving production scanner market is about to undergo a price/performance revolution," said Jonathan Bees, Editor-in-Chief for Better Buys for Business. "Of the two models, the DR-9080C gets our Editor's Choice Award, and both new scanners are recognized as offering fast speeds and excellent features."
The new devices offer a long list of functions exclusive to Canon, including a unique "multistream" feature that enables users to generate multiple images in a variety of combinations (e.g. color, grayscale, R/G/B color dropout and binary) from a single scan. Canon's patented staple detection feature prevents damage to both the device and the scanned document by automatically halting the scanning process, significantly reducing equipment jams and document damage. The DR-9080C and DR-6080 also offer user-selectable ultrasonic and detect-by-length double-feed detection, automatic shading to ensure consistent image quality. On-board JPEG compression and recognition of the text orientation of a scanned document to correctly rotate the image further enhance output options. Both devices feature a 500-sheet Automatic Document Feeder plus hardware and/or software deskewing control.
Enhanced image quality comes from a built-in smoothing function designed to reduce moiré effects and Advanced Text Enhancement for better legibility of text. The use of dual light sources ? one on each side of the sensor unit ? eliminates unwanted lines or shading due to wrinkled documents.
In addition to ISIS and TWAIN drivers, the new DR-9080C and DR-6080 are bundled with Canon's new scanning utility software ? CapturePerfect 2.0 ? which incorporates several software enhancements including the ability to save images in searchable PDF form, scan-to-mail and a host of powerful image correction tools.
The Canon DR-9080C and DR-6080 will be available through authorized Canon Image Filing Systems dealers, Canon Office Imaging Dealers and select distributors. Available options include an imprinter for the printing of text messages on the front of scanned documents and an endorser for automatically stamping serial numbers and other user-designated messages on the document reverse. An add-on barcode software module is also available for the ISI/TWAIN driver.
