Hi Dave, there are many opportunities in RI for what you describe... probably not anything right off of 95, but if you can stop in Jamestown or Newport, that would be your best bet.
Jamestown has the Beavertail lighthouse, which is a really incredible location. Newport has the Goat Island lighthouse & Castlehill - which would be the most accessible. Narragansett has the Pt. Judith light, which is also a great coastal location.
Have a look here for what's in my portfolio as far as lighthouses:

Any of these are going to take off I-95... and going to Newport, you're going to want to have some time there.. at least 1-2 hours, but I'm sure you'd be able to quickly come across some good photo opportunities as well.
Cheers, Chris

Thanks, Chris.
When looking at the route and seeing what was relatively close off I-95, I found Pt. Judith but had no clue whether it would be a good location. I'll have to look at the locations of the other two you suggest.
I will be staying over night somewhere in RI after going to Smithfield, arriving Sunday night. On Monday morning, I'll leave out, needing to catch a flight in Newark at 8 PM. So I should have some "dilly dally" time for photos on the way back to Newark.
I'll go look at your portfolio and maybe get some inspiration to make the most of my time.
Thanks, though!
Dave

Have fun Dave - most of the lighthouses - the two I mentioned in Newport - are on the west side of Aquidneck Island located on the Narragansett Bay - so sunset/dusk is your best bet for photo ops in Newport.
On the east side of Aquidneck Island is Sachuest Point National Wildlife Preserve. This is one of the most amazing locations on Aquidneck Island you can go in the early morning... again check my portfolio for shots of Sachuest Point.
Point Judith is equally good in the morning and at dusk.

Oh yeah... one last thing... be careful in Rhode Island... from a photography perspective - you'll probably like it so much you'll want to move here!
