Q. Eastern European Travel - Moldova

I have a trip in the planning stages and as I get closer to departure I'm going to want to know of tips, tricks and insider information regarding the packing and handling of my gear, and any other pertinent info that would enhance my understanding of the region. I plan on taking a Canon 10D, probably 2gb of memory, spare batteries, flash, power converter, a small monopod; one maybe two lenses.
1) I've never traveled internationally - let alone to a former soviet bloc country - I intend to carry my camera, lenses, and accessories with me on the plane. What can I expect going through security the closer I get to Romania, Moldova or the Ukraine? Any cautionary advice related to customs agents or other security concerns?
2) Do any of you have other tips to offer that would help the trip go smoothly?
Thanks much, Christopher

Hi Christopher !
First of all : BE VERY CAREFULL :-) ! Need to have dollars in your pocket.. I mean if you have some trouble with police or any other officail problem firts you should resolve the problem with your cash :-) !! If you have to organize your business, the cash always raise the speed ... Leave your car always empty, no box, no package inside the car. Park in light.. i mean, under the street light. Do not rent car like audi, mercedes, bmw ... The risk of stealing is higher for those cars. Should have some friend or some contact person. Otherwise you will have great time.. The people are friendly, no globalized feeling, many beautiful places many many kind of nations, languages, historical buildings, beautiful girls, many delicious foods, fine wine, vodka, palinka !!! The power supply is 230V if there is any in the wire :-) ! Back in time feeling. Visit Transylvania (we called Erdely) by allmeans. Write me email if you need some help. bye Kador

As about our services:
We usually meet our client at the airport and guide during the whole stay in Moldova. Our representative (English speaking person) with car will be with you all the required time – showing everything of your interest.
Also, we could arange a trip to Romania (Dracula's castele) or Ukraine by car.

Cristopher, here is my advice for trabel to Moldova, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Estonia, Lithuania and other countries.
Make sure that you know that most famous cities and tourist attraction places are attracting bad people, crooks, and thief professionals. Will be great idea to have some local friends guiding you, or go somewhere in group, at least not alone. Try to control situation around you. Remember, that when you are carefully composing shot, you are vulnerable because don't pay attention what is behind and who is next to you. This is serious. When I lived back there I used to look at tourists like little kids. Because I had feeling that they don't know where they are really, and how to deal with surroundings.
Worse spots are always railway and buss stations, central city areas with lot of tourists
Don't keep your all money, documents, credit cards in one bag, pocket. In case something happen you will not loose everything...

i travelled thru moldova three years ago. the only time yo might have difficulty is if you travel to the trans dniestrian area. when i was there, you had to pass a checkpoint manned by the military. your camera equipment COULD come under scrutiny there. if not, you should be in the clear.
james having said that, i'm not sure of the current state of affairs regarding the moldovan/trans dniestrian crossing (its the same country but a breakaway region of molodova, mostly russian speaking).
