  Q. Renaissance Photographic Competition

Asked by alison rushworth    (K=40) on 9/27/2007
Hi,

This is great competition being run by a friend of mine in aid of Breast Cancer Care. The brief is simple:

Renaissance, Life is full of moments when the human spirit triumphs over adversity, when the human eye suddenly sees the world from a new perspective, when we rediscover a sense of awe and wonder

The competition has some great judges and supporters, there are excellent prizes and the opportunity to be exhibited at a top London gallery.

For more information about the contest please see the official blurb below or view the website (http://www.renaissancephotography.org)

I hope this is something that will interest this community.

Kind Regards
Alison

Renaissance is a photographic competition to raise money for the Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care.

Judged by a celebrity panel consisting of photographers Eamonn McCabe, Mary McCartney, singer/songwriter KT Tunstall and eve editor Sara Cremer, the competition runs from 10 September to 10 December 2007 and will result in a four day exhibition and sale at Proud Galleries, London in March 2008. There are over £2,000 worth of prizes to be won, including an African safari and photographic equipment and the competition is supported by Helena Christensen, Katie Derham, Martha Lane Fox, Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Parminder Nagra. The competition site is www.renaissancephotography.org.

Renaissance is the brainchild of Fiona Gifford, a 34 year-old lawyer who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. Following her recovery, Fiona realized how little she, and her peers, knew about breast cancer:

”I was diagnosed very early by chance at a routine check-up. It would never have occurred to me to be breast aware as I didn’t think that it was a concern for people my age. Had it not been for a very thorough doctor, I would have been diagnosed considerably later. I am now very keen to raise awareness in younger people, to ensure that my age group becomes sensitized to the various lifestyle choices which may help prevent them from getting breast cancer.

The idea of a photographic competition originally came from a friend whose mother had died of the disease. As a keen amateur photographer I saw this as the perfect way to raise money for, and awareness of, breast cancer in younger people. The theme of Renaissance expresses my experience of illness. Despite all the negative feelings during the months of treatment there were paradoxically moments of great joy and energy gained from a sudden understanding of how special life, and those around me, were. I hope that this competition will be a celebration of life and love in the face of adversity”.

All proceeds of the competition and exhibition will be donated to the Lavender Trust at Breast Cancer Care, a charity which raises money specifically to fund information and support for younger women with breast cancer.
