  Q. Norman P800D, 800 Watt-second studio strobe power pack

Asked by David Goldfarb    (K=7611) on 4/13/2003
This is a Norman P800D, 800 Watt-second strobe pack with a few cosmetic scuffs, but in excellent working order. I bought it used from Ken Hansen in New York about 10 years ago for around $500, when Hansen was an authorized Norman service depot. Takes any of the 900 series heads (not included). This puts out enough light for 35mm and medium format portraits and tabletop work. I've attached a few images made with this system.

You can read about the Norman strobe system at www.photo-control.com. There is a description of the P800D there in a more modern case, but the features are all the same. Here's Norman's description:

"The Norman P800D Power Supply operates with all Series 900 Commercial lampheads including the LH2000, LH2400, LH2400B, IL2500 Illuminator, IL2500-TC ?Tube in a Can? Illuminator, LH4000 Dual-Cable Lamphead, FS10 Fresnel Spotlight, TL-2000 Tri-Lite and the discontinued FS6 Fresnel Spotlight.

"It has been produced since 1972 and has remained popular ever since. By today?s standards the P800D is oversize and overweight, but it?s reputation for reliability is such that sales remain strong on the unit.

"The P800D has two channels of 400 w-s, two lamphead outlets per channel, and a full/half power switch on each channel. One-light options are 200, 400, 600 or 800 w-s."

Norman strobes aren't as efficient as some of the newest high-end studio systems in terms of converting W-s to light, but I like the quality of the light they put out, and they were the industry standard for many years, so there is lots of affordable used Norman stuff out there, and it's incredibly rugged, built for school portrait work and such. I'm selling it only because I've upgraded to a P2000D.

$250 plus shipping (figure around $15 USPS in the U.S., and somewhat more to other countries), or pick it up if you're local to New York City.
