If you can get a good used N90 you'll have a great camera that will last you a long time yet.
As an alternative look at the N80. Not quite as durable or featurepacked but very capable in its own right. An F100 might be overkill for you.
N90 falls somewhere between those two.

I'll agree with Jeroen on the alternatives to the N90, but why not consider the N90s. Nikon updated the N90 shortly after its release and it is a great camera. You can find it cheap and its going to be able to grow with you a little more than the N90. But if you can get a great deal on the N90 go for it, it's a great platform, I personally love it.

The N90 is a great camera. As an option you could also look at the N70, same AF system and and metering system just not as many features.

...plenty of used n90's on ebay...and also available in any good camera store where they accept trades. Good durable camera except for the rubber covering on back. It dries out and wears off. A problem that never was corrected by Nikon. It does no affect the camera's functions.
