These images are amazing - I held my breath after first viewing them. I've had the good fortune of knowing Michael at work and hope to glean a bit of his knowledge before I make the trip out to these canyons. To quote the history section of the Navajo Parks & Recreation website about these canyons - Michael has captured the "feeling of what Mother Nature has to offer" and is "in harmony with something greater than himself".

Wonderful shapes and colours here Michael! I really like it a lot! The only thing i can complain about are the small spots of sunlight that is "burnt out"...but i know how difficult it is to make it perfect in this circumstances!

Simply spectacular! I must visit there one day. Thanks for providing so much detail on the "how" of visiting this wonderful place.

Thank you Paul,

and...

I will be in San Antonio on Friday for a few days. Any suggestions? We will be hitting the major tourist sites, but was wondering if there is a particular view (like my Union Station shots) that should be visited by a UFer.

Hugo -

Thanks. Posted together because they frame together. A little bit of deep red wood around them and they glow. Thanks.

Ahhh.. The overkill! I'm seeing in stereo! I remember those, these photos sure are fantastic. But seriously, the quality of each of these shots is too high to post them together... I think I'd appreciate each individual one more if I could see them individually. I do agree with your selection, though. These do definitely qualify as prime selection! Great stuff, Michael!

Cheers,

Hugo

Very useful info Michael. I don't think I'd like to climb ladders with all my gear so I'd probably just go for the easier upper. Thanks again.

Great shots Mike, color saturation looks good though I'd increase the contrast a little more(Just My Opinion) otherwise well seen. Hope to visit that area soon, kind regards.

(lurk)

There are two tours, the upper and lower. The upper canyon tour is straight in and that is the one I took. The lower canyon offers a more difficult hike, which requires descending on ladders.

If you google the site you can get intelligence - most of the posted photos are from the upper site and it is more popular. Perhaps the lower canyon would be more private?

Seems we are both lurking - hehe. Thanks again for the tips. When I go to such places I try to visit on week days and I usually go at the most uncomfortable times which is off season. It was snowing when I went to Bryce canyon and I nearly froze up there but I got my shots without the people. I try to have at least one or 2 weekdays at the most popular places and National Parks to avoid the crowds. I don't do crowds very well.

Thanks again. Cheers - Ann :)

Hey Ann -

Like you, I go for people avoidance as well, but this is one of those sites where you have to take a tour because it is on Native American land - a reservation and a guide is required. Also, there will be a lot of people, a lot. Bring a tripod, wide angle lens, and be patient.

Perhaps off season is a better time to go than when I went on the week spanning July 4th.

Hi Michael, Thanks for all the great info. I will definitely take it with me when I do get the opportunity to vist there again. I always seem to be stuck for time so the more info I ahve ahead of time the faster I can get my photos and get them better. I have heard about the photo tours but I generally like to wing it and go in my own time without the crowds. It doesn't always allow for the best lighting but I usually get plenty of space and sometimes I get lucky with lighting. Very handy to know how long I will need to see it and where the best shots are to be found.

Thank you and Cheers - Ann :)

Ann:

Thanks for the positive comment - means a lot when you start to see people with 22K karma points liking your stuff...

Anyway, yes, you have to time your visit to get the light beams. There are tours for photography that cost more that are timed around noon to get the light beams, but we took a cheaper and earlier tour at 11 AM and managed to catch up with the light at the very end of our visit.

Keep in mind during summer the days are longer, and in winter the days are short, so the sun position timing will vary. A little bit of research will get you the correct time.

Leave yourself at least 30 minutes just to walk around. These two shots are actually near the mouth of the canyon that I visited (there are two sites) and the back is actually not open enough for dramatic shots.

Let me know if you want more hints. You can see other shots of the canyon by looking at Flikr dot com and searching for Antelope Canyon.

Had to check rule #6 before commenting. Think I'll skip that casino and go to Vegas instead. haha

Anyway...back to this iamge at hand. I love this place. I got within a half hour of it but jsut couldn't quite make it when I was in the area. Ther eis so much to see and do there. Oh well I have an excuse to go back now.

Both of these photos are superb. Wonderful lighting with a nice amount of dust in the air to give you the nice soft light beams. Do you have to be there in the middle of the day with the sun high in the sky to get the sun beaming down into the canyon like that? Beautiful images Michael and into my favourites this goes.

I hop you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Cheers - Ann :)

Slava:

Thank you for the positive comment - looks like I do not have to invoke rule #6.

And for those who wonder what I am talking about, check out Slava's portfolio, quite nice. There is a shot called "Rule #6", quite funny/horrifying.

Ah yes - I know you!

Believe it or not I do browse your portfolio, especially the recent juror work, find the geometrics interesting. Yes, thanks for the comments.

The canyon is a wonderful place to explore, a minor fee, some ride time, and a nice place to walk through with the light beams and shapes.

the waves of light on the floor on the left are wild. The structures have this smooth rich feel despite there massiveness. The one on the right feels like I am being led into something beautiful.
