No, it's the small angle between your reflector and the lens, Ty. Ideally, your primary light source at 45 degrees from the lens gives nice shadows and definition, and the more diffused the light, the more pleasing the shadows, but that's just another rule to be broken.
I actually used a canon 430ex reversed with a 22" reflector, so by your critique i must have had the reflector too close to the flash? thanks for the help, i'm still learning.
I think the on-camera flash is to be avoided for anything except fill light. The problem with a light source so close to the lens is that you don't have any sculpting shadows on your subject.
