About 1. I composed the image with my camera on a tripod and a 20mm lens with a half black cokin filter accessory on it which hides half of the image.
2. I sat on the chair with a letter in my hands and took the first shot using the self-timer,allowing only my shadow appearing in the frame since I was hidden by the 'filter'
. 3. I rotated the filter so as to hide the left (already exposed) part of the image, put the letter on the chair, adjusted the data back for a double exposure and took the 2nd shot.
4. Doing such tricks at the time of shooting is so exciting! - It's a pity some photographers think that photoshop is their only creative weapon...

I love this photo, & love it more for your explanation of how you did it. This is so creative. I am still an amature myself but have always thought of PS as kind of cheating. Someone gave me the newest version. I have never used it. I don't know that I would. It would alter my photos to something I didn't really see. That is what I love about photography, the ability & creativity to show what one really saw, unaltered. Great work here! You have a lot of interesting pictures! No wonder someone sent me your url to check out. (sorry so long).

Very creative Kostas. Todays digital camera lend themselves to more of this work on the PC I think. I got a Rebel XT and I don't even think that I could do a double exposure if I wanted to.

I love this shot - the whole thing is spectacular - the shadow of the chair seat is perfect and the way you sat on the chair is wonderful. I love how you left the letter on the chair too. I will have to play like this so time. Wonderful work and thanks for the "about" - fantastic!

welcome to usefilm, Jeff :-)

i think i shot 3 or 4 frames using this setup, but not from the same angle. this one here i liked most ;-)

thank you all for your comments!

Wow - as other people have said, I'm glad that you took the time to think this one out. Gives me hope that I dont need digital darkroom... Was this one of many tries to get it right?

Super job! At first glance I thought you had used Photoshop but this is more impressive! And I love the humor of the pic. I like the colors because the "real life" color of the chair sets off the monotone of the shadow world better.

Yeah good point. If we can do it without photoshop we are probably saving a few measures of defintion. Especially useful for those of us without a "raw" function on our digitals that I suspect.

Gary Gantert   {K:2104} 11/2/2004
Hey Peter Pan, not a very safe way to sit on a chair.
It does read better than the normal posture.
Photoshop is a great tool, but only one.
My digital camera actually allows multiexposure so I can do incamera 'tricks'. Some things are easier incamera but photoshop allows for anything. There are no problems, only solutions.

Guilty as charged! I have a Hoya half image filter which I bought thinking "oooh I could do soemthing really creative with that" and have never cracked the seal on it. Mr 'digital darkroom' here, is too hooked up with PS to belive that traditional methods can pay dividends (and be much easier in the long run). As somone else said it snot just that this is a brilliantly concieved picture but also the methodology that deserves praise. It really is one of those "why didn't I think of that" images.

Pity the light levels changed very subtley between exposures as I can very faintly see a slight difference in the wall where the filter was.

Brilliantly concieved and executed, truly deserving of POTD

Taking a more "mature" look at this picture again the only thing I can say is that I find somehow distacting that little faucet behind the back of the chair. I think you should have removed it in PS. Other than that, my opinion is that it is a trully "artistic" and original picture! Well done Kosta

Paolo De Maio   {K:34932} 7/8/2003
Great sense of composition, a masterpiece of double exposition!
In order to my shot (invisible man) you right Kostas!
Still was my intention to create a break between the first focus (cigarette in the lower right corner) and deep of field (on the top of the frame) with a kind of special softness to give more impact to the photo.
By the way thank you for you kind comment I have appreciate it a lot!!

Thank you

Paolo

Kostas, very well done experiment! And an appealing result, indeed.
And quite fun to enlarge your arsenal of tips and tricks like that. (I don't see any conflict between using both your trick and photoshop tricks at all. Different tools, that all.)

I did something similar, trying to produce an 'escher'-like image. Not at all as appealing as yours, but quite fun to play with.

Cheers,
Christian

Kostas, I admire your creativity. This is a very inspirational and provoking image, showing the viewer what can be achieved with those ordinary Sensia slides if one just takes a moment to think about it. Now why oh why was that watertap there? It would have been a perfect shot. Still, it is an excellent image that does honour to the 'best photograph' project.

excellent work! you're right, there are lots of opportunities also for in camera creativity.
very good idea (not always behind the use of a creative technique) well executed. A simpler background could help maximizing the impact.
regards, Luigi

I love the way you did this, it is as someone already said here, doing this with the camera instead of in photoshop makes you think before you shoot. Using PS alot makes one shoot and just stop thinking it sometimes seems. I also believe this type of experiments are really cool and exciting.

Very creative and original. I think the fact that you avoided the digital darkroom for this shot and opted for pre-"darkroom" techniques and equipment suggests you put much more thought put into it. Moreover, a shot like this takes patience and effort on your part. I only wonder what added effect there would be in black and white. Nonetheless, excellent photograph.
