I agree with both commentators. If you can get a shallower depth of field, perhaps using aperture priorty set to less than f8, you'll isolate your subject better. You've done a fantastic job getting the details; it's all important in any portrait to get the eyes in focus!

Great job with the flash exposure. Any low-contrast subject is hard to capture.

The cat was practising?

He/She's got that typical "you want me to smile in front of the camera? forget it!" cat-like look and the front paws are in the proper arrogant configuration. This is definitely not a begging dog!

But your cat should choose a better background. Too many colors and objects distract the eye from the only thing that matters: the holy catness.

A black cat looks best on a nice bright light contrasting background that doesn't draw attention away from the center of attention: the divine furryness. A little more practice and your royal catship will blast away the entire four-footed usefilm.com competition! And bouncing the flash or using natural light will display its eyes in full feline glamour.

Remember: you may hold the camera, but you'll always be your cats humble servant.

Well the flash exposure is perfect so you did well there! As a photograph, I would have moved more to the right to get rid of all the busyness on the right and just have the more neutral background of the curtains in behind him. Can you bounce your flash? If so, try bouncing and you'll get a much more flattering light.
