Excellent, Antonia! The toning and grain in this photo go perfectly with the clothing and jewelry, the ragged poster on the wall and the lighting for a very convincing period feel! Were this a more 'straighforward' portrait, I'd say the bright edge of her forehead and cheek are a little blown-out, but for the old-timey look, it works! Great job!

Thanks again Carsten. Your last explanation was crystal clear...and I'm excited to go apply it. Never noticed the new feature in CS..I'll check it out...I have straight Photoshop CS is that not the same as Photoshop 8 CS? If not, I need to go get the upgrade. I kept hearing Photoshop 8 this and that and I've been assuming that's what I have, but mine doesn't say "8." As for the vignette, yes, that would be nice. By the way...you're HIRED!!! Antonia

Toni, in PS 8 (CS) the lens blur filter is a new feature, to simulate the "bokeh" of photographic lenses: Filter > Blur > Lens Blur. Play with the different sliders, quite sophisticated tool. Your image as background layer, I made a new layer with a copy of this image: right click in the layers palette on the word Background > Duplicate (or draw the layer image onto the "Create a new Layer" button). On the top layer, I performed the lens blur filter action. Add a layer mask: Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal All. Nothing changed ... But now: set the foreground color to black, chose the gradient tool, click on the "radial gradient" button, and draw from the center to an edge. Voila, the underlying layer (sharp eye region) is unmasked, in a radial blended transition. Thats what I mean with a gradient mask. Regarding old lenses: perhaps a slight vignetting could make the "old touch" even better, what do you think ?

...Carsten, please cancel the portion of my question regarding your teasing about the old lenses and DOF... I had things reversed for a moment in my thinking... I get it now...lol

Carsten, I love what you've done -- beautiful result. Would you please explain what a lense blur filter is? I use PS's gaussian filter. Also, how do you do a gradient mask? Perhaps you are using tools I am familier with, but I want to nail down more precisely what you did, so I can try it. And when you referred to those old lenses and large formats didn't have very good DOF, you were teasing, right? Sorry if my questions seem a tad dense, just want to clarify. It pleases me to no end that you've taken this much time on this photo, and I hope you don't mind my asking for more -- the price you pay for your genius...lol.

Toni, you are an artist, very imaginative shot, masterly executed ! I have a large glass negative with my grand-grandparents. In my "former life" as film photographer I made a poster sized print, sepia toned, hangs on the wall in my parents`s house. I love those old prints ! One thing came into my mind: those old lenses and large formats had not very much DOF - so I tried a lens blur filter on your photo (hope you dont mind) and focussed on the eye region with a gradient layer mask, thus blurring the peripheral parts to get this "daguerrotype effect". Thank you for posting this great photo !

Jeanette, thank you. This was taken very recently, and the only PS work was to convert it to monochrome using channel mixer, and my usual levels and curves tweaking. The light was coming from a nearby doorway. She is dressed up in vintage clothing belonging to her mother, which ads to the effect.
