Thank you very much Jeanette, for your suggestion of backlight and also front reflector. This is just the sort of comment I need as I am just beginning to learn about lighting and how it is used and what are it's effects. I have never tried back lighting, though I have noticed its effects many times. I will experiment with both backlight and reflected light in my next still lifes. Thank you once more!

Once again - i red Inas suggestion about the table. We all have different taste. Me my self liked this one better becuase it?s more unusual with a material under the fruit and also a dark almost black one was cool in my opinion, this with the colourful fruit and the cold metal knife - yeah! Go for what you like Mark!!!! :)

I like the more soft reflection on the knife here, looks really like metal. The reflection of the orange as well. Just a little suggestion of lightning. Use a more backlightning (but just a little) and also reflect the light with a white material of some kind. I have a real reflector, but you can use what ever you have a home. I?m thinking of the shadow in front of the knife and the pear - if you use a reflected light you would avoid that black shadow there. So the reflector should be somewhere in front of you, choose best angle for reflection.
I?m not saing this is bad - just an suggestion to improve.... Hop you don?t mind!!!

Mark, you're setting us for a nice challenge here. I think Yahya is right on the money about the fabric. The color is good, but a heavy texture dampens the reflections. I think his idea of the piano is excellent. If I may make another suggestion, in addition to that, is to add a tall clear glass full of water behind the fruit. The water will pick-up the colors of the fruit, and give you some glitz. OK, I'm out of here :)

Hi Yahya. Interesting observation about shadows. The fruit is lit from directly overhead using a recessed ceiling light only. There are other cieling lights in the room, but their effect on this composition is small or none. Because the lighting is from directly ovehead there are no interesting shadows. The overhead light creates interesting reflections on the orange from the silver tray, but no shadows. And as you say, the dark fabric would prevent interesting shadows from being seen. I used the dark fabric laid on top of my table to try to reduce the distraction of the wood, and also to create a dramtic contrast between the fruit and the setting. That was partially successful, I think, but there may have been more interest had I used the more reflective table top... Perhaps this arrangement is just too simple to create much interest without a more elaborate setting and/or some different lighting.
A problem with this composition, in my opinion, is that the single overhead light allows no real illumination of the bottom half of the pear. We see the top of the pear in bright light (slightly blown highlight) but with nothing on the underside. While this may add a little drama to the composition, I would like it better if there was some dim light on the underside of the pear, showing it's shape and color a little bit.
But, each composition is a lesson!
Also, thank you for the idea of using my piano in a still life! The piano has a highly reflective black top, which could work very well with a well lit still life at night. Also, the use of small fruit or other objects on the keys or even inside could be very interesting. I will think more about this!

It has a good graphical sensibility to it. It appeals to me particularly because of the quirky drama you introduce with the orange on the silver platter and the knife. Who will get carved up first (and by whom?)

No need to thank me mark , it was a pleasure. anyway, excellent lighting here, the curviture and textures are great, due to lighting ofcourse :) still something missing too. i guess its the lack of shadows, the smooth shadows , or the interesting surface as ur dining table, the rough fabric u choosed eleminates shadows and reflections. if u do the same settings on your dining table, or biano, it would be another spirit. IMHO. still excellent result.
