The variation of light from right to left (which seems to match the wind) adds some drama to the photograph. For this reason I like the composition, although I do see the merit of the sugested portrait layout. It would work both ways equally well in my opinion. Nice capture.

Thanks for your comments - I think you are correct in your critique of the composition. I initially thought the space on the right was needed to balance the clouds of steam drifting off to the left of the picture. I was also trying to giving some sense of perspective (this is a very large geyser - 75 feet wide, 150 feet or more tall) but I think I failed in my composition to suggest its large size. I may try cropping radically and see what happens.

This is nice and it makes me want to go. Great capture of the moment, exposure works, but I think the overall composition is bit off. Wasted space on the right takes away from the image. I think a vertical making the fountain the subject would have worked better here.
