at first I though of course that these are drops ...but the quality and the clarity of that image and the very nice reflections on them really gives me the idea of ...perfect crystalic spheres, oh my, even the very tiny looks so well... I like a lot also the sparking parts of the blured drops, it makes shapes line macroscopic snow details... absolutely excellent image that worths any award...
complements...favorite of course...

Thank you Eb - Believe it or not, I used the D70's built-in flash. I tried other flashes for the drops but the ringflash dont work at all because of the small circle reflections it causes, while stronger flashes produces big square reflections. The built in flash produces the least intrusive reflections and you can through TTL and the menu function, easily control the strength and therefore the DoF too.
I had a quick glance at your portfolio and must say I am impressed.Particularly the landscapes, forests, macro and florals (yes I'm naturally biased). Your early background in photography really shines through in the well balanced compositions, saturated colours and spot-on exposures. I am adding you to my friends list to come back and spent some time. Kind regards.

Hi Joggie, I think that explains it. The drops do look like they're placed on a surface with different polarity; wax would definitely qualify...;) Interesting, though; I always like that in a shot where there's more to it than initially meets the eye... And of course, I trust you on the use of Photoshop, I did by no means imply I believed it was, but it could've been an explanation. This shot is getting better with every comment I write...:)

Hi Hugo - I looked at it again - think I figured it out. The surface of the leaf on which the drops are laying is shiny in itself (covered by a thin but clear layer of wax - hence the nice rounded drops). The angle I chose eliminated the reflective surface of the leave, only revealing the smooth surface colours underneath - hence the "impression" of absence of a surface. I can assure you the only PS work was a slight crop for composition and sharpness and contrast. Regards.

Right! I see what you mean... Interesting deception of the eye, they do seem to float. Seems increadible; the reflection of the leaf in the background becomes (only after your reply) apparent, but I still can't suppress the feeling that there's something weird going on. the shadows of the drops do look sharp, but the surface of the leaf itself is ridden of texture, and looks out of focus, even immediately below the sharp drops. Very interesting effect. Not even photoshop induced? Pretty impressive. Make that Very impressive...:)

Thanks for your detailed comment Hugo - much appreciated. Their is no trickery here! The drops are actually on the surface of a leaf and at an angle to the leaf in the background, projected through the big drop. Kind regards.

Hi Joggie, this is almost too good to be true. Of course, the angle at which you took this is very complementory, allowing you to grab many drops at a rather small view angle (good choice!) The trickery, suggesting the drops are actually ON the leaf is very well done. The DOF gives you away, though, but only if you look at the difference in sharpness of the leaf in the drop compared to the green patern. Very creative, and technically very well captured too.
