Yes the dark shadows around the frame are a matte that i added over the image with a black gradient layed over. I think that in the right picture it can help set a mood to the final image. In this image i wanted people to look down the center of the image so darkening the edges helps that.

have you used digital postprocess in order to dark the upper part of the sky ?
