About This is re-uploaded version of my image "Rainforest 2" from the Bridal Veil Falls series. The earlier version was inadvertantly oversharpened in the upload process. It is my favourite of the series.

Thanks, Ina! I feel some inspiration from Elliot Porter's work - at least what I remember from studying his images in the 70s. It might be difficult to get his print quality level with small format and digital display medium. I am having fun, nonetheless.

Superb image Eb, it look prehistoric, amazing colors, the trees look alive! This would make a great panoramic IMO - Best regards, Ina

Kambiz, thanks for appreciating this image. Mother nature made sure that the scene was photogenic! We have very flat sky lighting in a slight drizzle. The focal length is 80 mm. with an effective 120 mm. crop on my digital SLR which gives a pleasing foreshortening effect. RAW post-processing involved some boost in saturation and contrast. Once resized the image was sharpened to maximize detail. That's about it!

a very creative and beautiful landscape with those lovely greens. I am not sure how you create such a beauty. It is almost like a picture from a text book in forestry.

You are right, Dave. Sharpness hunger is a carry over from my old film days, particularly large format.

I like it too. I'd say it is a bit on the sharp side but I think that extreme sharpness gives it an almost surreal appearance. Oh, and the green color is just wonderful.

Takes me right back to LOTR, Eb! A relly nice series of shots! I have to admit I'm a bit of a sharpness freak too, does that carry over from film? But I like the way you've done these.
Dave.

I did click on it Eb but being an attachment to the thread it only opens to 400 X 266 but that's OK because I can still see that's it's completely unsharpened. For this sort of soft texture of the moss I love it this way. For the most part I like things to be razor sharp but in this case this moss just screamed out to me for less detail of the in between ferns etc and more softening of the moss itself to give it it's fullest effect. I do get a bit concerned about getting into too much debate about personal tastes cause I'd hate to undermine the artist but I think we understand each other here without one upsetting the other. I'd hate to have to go back into the WRP because I've upset anyone. (Website Relocation Program - hehe)

Thanks for the communications. Always a pleasure. :)

Cheers - Ann :)

Ann, try clicking the thumbnail and it will open to full size - well almost, at 750x pixels. The image is fully unsharpened - no in camera sharpening and no post sharpening. But you have given me an idea! I will try some selective sharpening and see what kind of effect I can get. Your are not at all any trouble. This is supposed to be a photographer's forum which also creates discussion, perhaps controversy, stimulation, striving for improvement and appreciation of different points of view. If that's trouble then it is good!

Oh yeah now THAT'S what I'M talking about. :) I love it!! I feel awful that you went to all that trouble just to placate me Eb. It's clearly obviously a case of personal tastes and varying monitors as noted by you.

Having said that, however, I really do love this one and even though it be a bit small I'm going to slip this one into my favourites. I believe I can explain now why I prefer this version. Moss is soft and mushy kind of oozy like so in my humble opinion it's better suited to the softer look to further enhance the softness of it.

Sorry about all the trouble but really happy that you did this to show me.

Peace? :) Cheers - Ann :)

Ann, blur?! What are you are asking of a detail freak! In fact, for me the sharpening variable has been the most frustrating aspect of relearning photography, the digital medium and web photos. I understand that sharpness is very monitor dependent. I use a CRT monitor, and its apparent sharpness is dependent on the screen resolution, image size, viewing distance, its age and quality of manufacture. Aperture Grille CRTs will be sharper than Shadow Mask CRTs and then there are the LCDs which appear very sharp and can be further sharpened with user controls. I sometimes check my images on my CRT and on my wife's LCD for comparison. My CRT's display is comparatively soft but displays at much higher resolution yet a smaller image. There is a world of difference, but both monitors agree by displaying most usefilm images on the softer side of the spectrum. Unfortunately, the modern photographer can not control the display variable anymore. That said, I appreciate your point Ann and conceed that softer focus can be effective. By comparison, in my "Rainforest 3" the far background is out of focus and creates a nice effect. I also notice that thumbnail size photos on usefilm, are much softer focus and thus forces one to look at the overall composition and ignore detail. When one opens the thumbnail there is either confirmation of a great photo, but most often a disappointment because the photo has lost it in the details. I'd better quit before - don't intent this to become a rant. Bottom line, Ann - I much appreciate your photos and your comments since both get me into a reflective mood.

Yes my favourite too Eb and I love the title. :) Glad you reposted but it still looks a bit sharp. Perhaps a bit of blur wouldn't go astray in this particular case to further enhance the softness of the moss. This rich green mossy forest is just so cool. I love it. Great capture.

Cheers - Ann :)
