Good eye here. I think Terry's comment that you've seen a "sky" here offers a good explanation of why this arrangement of colors and shapes works so well.
I think it would be a stronger texture study, if it had more depth of field. With these small-sensor digital cameras, the problem is usually too much DOF, but in the macro range one often needs to stop down all the way, and if the G2 allows you some manual control, you might be able to get another stop or so.
I might also digitally "burn in" the bright spot in the upper left corner just a bit, so that it doesn't pull quite so strongly.
Alisa, you know this could have been a much cleaner and simpler image had you simpy engaged in a bit of sanding and painting first. But in a way your lack of preparation inadvertently paid off and you ended up with a really interesting variety of textures and colors. In fact, I quite like it.
