I agree Lisa.The only way to avoid this sort of flare caused by flickering candle flames known to me is by making sure that there is no air flow .Difficult in a non-AC room with ceiling - fan runningI'm attaching another example where the flames show almost no flare owing to the fan being switched off.

I really like the lighting in this photo, but the one thing that is distracting is the halos around the candles. Is there anyway to quell this a little? I'm only curious because I wonder for myself, as well. If I were to ever shoot something like this I would like to know how to get less of a spread out look to the light from the candles. I still really like this photo though so please don't get me wrong. I just find that brightness around the candles a little distracting.

I do have a star filter,didn't use it as I thought it would make the portrait look too contrived

I really like this soft light with burning candles...what would make this even more fun for you is to get and use a "Star" filter for your lens...very neat and jazz's up the light and cost between $40 and $50. US.
