One small bit of genius in this image was using food coloring in the straw. In particular, you chose a yellow that would contrast nicely with the blue plate. The DOF is not such a problem for me, although agree that it would be even stronger if you used a smaller aperture to get it sharp all the way across the crown.
I tried something similar but with must less impressive results. Thanks for your clear description of the set up, it will help anyone who tries to do this in the future.
Great job!

An excellent image Pat. What I like about it is the simple set-up, yet giving spectacular results. I agree with the increase of DoF. A suggestion for more light is to remove the speedlight from the camera and move it closer to the subject - that is if you can fire it by remote. You should be able to close down the aperture at least a f-stop. Looking forward to the future uploads. Kind regards. Joggie

>i might have used a bit smaller of an apperture as to get the whole 'ring' in focus...
Agreed. The trouble is the smaller apeture then requires more light :-( The give and take of photography. I shot this with my speedlight external flash. One can go through alot of batteries at f/11 as aposed to f/5.6 and the flash recycle time is alot slower after expending so much energy. However, I do think it might be worth it. I have been thinking of ways to get more power for may flash unit with out spending a ton of cash...
Good call though. I agee.

wow...how do i critique this??? I'll start with the good (and it's really ALL good)...the colors are amazing. your timing on this...impecable. i suppose if i MUST nit pick on something (which is what this area is for i suppose), i would say, i might have used a bit smaller of an apperture as to get the whole 'ring' in focus...but DOF is really artistic license and personal preference. Very well done!

Phillip: When I started playing around with this I was amazed how simple it is to do. Esspecialy with a digital SLR. I never attempted it with film. One could go through a many rolls of fllm.
The set up for this shot was a blue dinner plate with maybe 1/16th inch of clear water covering the plate. Useing a drinking straw, I would drop yellow colored water onto the plate, Trying to land on the focus point. So, one hand on the straw and one on the shutter release. You get a feel for the timing after a few shots. The drop from 1 or 2 feet above the plate really is not that fast. You depend alot on luck as to what the camera catches.
Camera settings where 1/60th or 1/125th @ f/5.6 Speedlight 550EX set to ETTL lens was Canon 35-70mm f/4-5.6 Camera distance was maybe 18 inches zoom was at 70mm Camera was Canon 350D (Rebel XT)
The 35-70mm f/4-5.6 was a lens I was never very fond of until attaching it to the 350D. The 350D's 1.6 mag factor realy makes this a useful lens for this application. Focal length becomes 110mm and minimum focus is around 15 inches. You could almost call it a Macro lens.
Anyway, I took maybe 35 shots and came up with these two I though where usable.
There is more experimenting to do. I would like to achieve better DOF. Closing down the lens requires more flash power and longer flash recycle times so I have been scheaming on a way to power the flash via home made external battery pack or AC supply. The manufactures want a fortune for these. Just the cord only that will fit the speedlight's DC port is $40.00
AA Batteries a cheap!!

Pat, I have always loved these types of images. While I have seen many of them over the years, each one is still different in one way or another and still attract the eye. How did you time the synch of the exposure, did you leave the shutter open and then hit the flash or did you just have your finger on the release and let go when you thought it should be about right? How many tries did it take to get this one? About how far away was the camera from the drop?
One of these days I will give it a try myself and see what I can come up with.
Thanks,
Phil

Simple setup really. A blue dinner plate with clear water on it. The drop was water from a drinking straw. Yellow food coloring added. The light is just my Canon Speedlight 550EX flash. This was shot in the kitchen sink which has a window above it. The window was covered with mini blinds but there was enough bounce from the flash to add some back light to the shot. the light blue at the top pf the frame is the edge of the plate where it begins to curve up a bit.

Good work Pat - i´m impressed of the colours here and wonder what it is .... the liquid and how you did it. Looks like there´s some kind of backlightning and also little from front, cause i can see the flash light reflections... (?)
Really look like a crown.

A deep and mysterious drop shot with great colours, but I think I would prefer the whole of the crown a little sharper. John
