About In 1985 a start was made with the reconstruction of the Batavia on a shipyard in the Dutch city of Lelystad. Under the guidance of Master-shipbuilder Willem Vos a group of young people worked on this project.
The keynote has been to achieve the most authentic reconstruction by using traditional materials and following the building methods of the day.

In order to reconstruct the Batavia use was made of a number of historical sources, from archives and museums, like building descriptions from the 17th century, prints, paintings etc. Also archaeological evidence, like the shipwrecks of the Vasa in Stockholm and the Batavia in the West-Australian Maritime Museum in Fremantle, Australië, were of great importance.

On 7th of April 1995 Beatrix, Queen of the Netherlands, officially named the ship "Batavia", after which the ship was launched. The Batavia is owned and made accessible to the public by the Batavia Yard.

On the 25th of September 1999 the Batavia had left the Netherlands for more than a year. The ship was taken to Sydney , Australia and was moored near the National Maritime Museum in Sydney.
On 12th June 2001 the Batavia returned to her home port Lelystad near the IJsselmeer, where she can be visited everyday from 10 to 5.

You see John........... a lot of interesting places over here. It could be the ones you've mentioned, but it is the Batavia, a replica of the ship that goes down on her maiden trip somewhere in the 17th century. the ship is on a warf and is very difficult to take a picture without distracting things in front and rear. When I have a change somewere in the future I take a change and when it worked I'll post it on USE.
Take care,

Klaas

Oh my God....I love these boats, could be the black perl...of Jack Sparow??? ;)
Hope to see that boat all into the frame, anyway the back has so many details that the image is already rich! Very nice dear friend.
Best regards!

Thanks Laura, when you have the plans to visit our little coutry sometime in the future, you must visit this warf, it's really amazing to see how they build these old ships. I took years, because they work only with volunteers and unemployed workers.
Have a nice weekend,

Klaas

Hi Rashed, They did an amazing job over here to copy this one. I'm glad you like the picture, and when I can find the time I'll try to go there again on an other part of the day when the sun is in good position to take the whole ship. It will be a bit difficult, because of all kinds of disturbing things in that area, it is almost not possible to come in a position to take the whole ship without these disturbing objects, but I'll do my best, but don't set a date for it.
All the best, and take care.

Hello Maxime, nice to hear from you again. I couldn't take it from another point, because it was behind bars, and on the other side only water. Thanks you like it, They're (the warf)now building a seventeenth century warship, wat was in those days the flagship of admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter, a famous navy-officer in those days, and still is. It was broke down because in those days it became to old, but all of the drawings were still in museums and so they picked up the Idea to keep the warf and rebuild this one.
I attach a picure of "Batavia's"profile.

Hi Riny, thanks for liking this picture better than your own. Can you show me that one?

Groetjes,
Riny
