About Series of 4x5 View Camera images from early 1970s. I scanned these old negatives at high dynamic range and attempted to reproduce the character of the original prints. It was much more challenging and time consuming than I had first assumed.

Bob, thanks for updating me on your photographic journey. I have never handled a Graflex, but know you will have the advantages of large format with some perspective control and not the disadvantage of the bulk of a view camera. I am impressed at how well the 4x5 negatives scanned into digital format. A good flatbed that can handle 4x5 transparencies should be on your wish list - bonus to all of us at Usefilm who would like to see your work! Your style of work is very well suited to large format. The details in your desert scenes will just pop. Best of luck!

Hi Eb,

First, I'd wanted to comment on your recent series of LF B/W scans you've been posting. Simply put, I love 'em. This is one of my favorites, though. There is such incredible movement caused by the clever use of lines in this image. Excellent composition and tonality, as well.

Secondly, I have not been participating on UF for some time. I do drop in a few times a week to check on images from Friends and Associates, but rarely do I comment.

I am in a sort of re-tooling mode with my photography. I recently picked up a used Graphflex Pacemaker and have been experimenting with some Polaroid B/W in an effort to become familiar with it's operations before moving into the sheet-film arena.
Eventually, I may again return to posting images here on UF, but for now that's still undecided.

Finally, I wanted to say 'thanks', for taking the time to critique many of my images recently. As usual, your comments help me to further understand what I've done correctly, as well as give me some thoughts for the next images.

Best regards and keep those 4x5 B/W scans coming... they are beautiful to look at.

Bob

I try Eb :) visually the lower part 3rd step curve) coordinate great flow in communication with the other elements. Actually if you take the curve a way it will be far less binding = will shallow this relation.
Sorry for my English it is hard to compose because of my multilingual influence.
Cheers to you Eb you’re a good sport,
Harry

Harry, thanks for being observant. I too like the sweep of the second step. Are you able to explain compositional rule that's involved? The only thing I can think of is that it helps define the "L" shaped structure.

Great composition Eb! The curvature line from the second step is the major key of this composition. I all ways look for those composing elements and it makes me happy when I found one!
Great work!
Cheers to you EB,
Harry

Thanks Ina - more are coming, but will run out in a few days. Only some of my 4x5 negatives survived. I will carry on with medium format stuff and upload a few of these, as well. This is an instructive process for me, so I am very pleased that I am getting encouraging comments.

I like the lighting in this one, Eb, the way it shows off the texture of the woodwork. Great tones, too!

Hi Kathie - thanks for commenting. The negatives are in good shape but rather flat contrast because they were designed for printing. It has taken quite some fiddling using curves to get the tonal range I am looking for. The colour ones are especially tough and some may never work out well enough. This exercise is teaching me more photoshop skills!

Very beautiful, excellent tones and exposure, lots of character in the interior, and lots of atmosphere - I hope you keep scanning more of these! Ina

I just LOVE these images, Eb! I don't know what you had to do to reproduce them, but you certainly did a great job! The tones are excellent!
