I really like the composition Heidi..really original 'take' on the Flat Iron.
Regarding the 'softness' you could try:
a) Image - Adjust _ Levels. Then drag the left hand marker to the edge of the left hand (shadow) graph. Then the same for the right hand (highlight) marker.
b) Filter_ Sharpen _ sharpen edges (once or maybe twice.

unfortunately I am still getting the hang of loading my scans...when I changed the resolution to 72 dpi -- the picture got soft --- anyone out there have any advice?

Hello Heidi, I like this shot and I think you did the right thing capturing it on film. It seems to be a little soft maybe that's due to the lighting. Well observed!
