About OK more boring colourless images as we begin a day trip down the Barry Way which follows the Snowy River on its journey to the Southern Ocean. The road is gravel and torturously winding. This entire area was burnt in 2003 and so the central them of the next round of images reverts to the theme of Recovery. In this shot a person unfamiliar with the Australian bush might think it was normal but what we are seeing here is thousands of tress that have been burnt severely and are now regenerating via epicormic shoots. These are branch buds that lie dormant under the bark and when the tree is burnt they sprout out of the trunks and begin again and the old branches are shed. Just another canny survival mechanism for a creature of the Australian bush which has been burned regularly since before man walked this place and then continued with deliberat fires lit by the Aboriginal people in some areas to provide fresh food sources and frighten animal life to move so they could be hunted more easily. The day was mainly overcast with sunny breaks and ended in a series of small storms as I photographed a wonderful small gorge late in the afternoon.

Dunno Roger, not boring for me, I've enjoyed your roadtrip through the bush. I guess it's something only Aussies can truly appreciate and understand. When I first came to New Zealand, I was stunned to see how lush and green everything was and didn't think I'd miss Oz at all. But burnt, flat and at times completely colourless, there's no mistaking an Australian landscape and weirdly enough, pulls the heartstrings like nothing else. Good on ya mate :)

Cheers
Rina.
