Thanks Gil - the ferns leaves has a semi-gloss surface and actually looks a bit plastic in real life - thats what caught my eye in the first place. Regards. Joggie

Hi Joggie, Excellent exposure and I like the subtle colors. I also like the diagnle composition. However for me there is something missing that would make it stronger. The fern is a living thing but it looks unreal here. I also think we have a different opinion on the degree of sharpness necessary in a photograph. After seeing your work I now understand your comment on my photo. We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are. We are all right. Regards, Gil

Hi Joggie, RE: (now how's that for critiquing your own phot!): I couldn't have phrased it better....:) Marking this as an excellent critique... heheheh. You've described exactly what I wanted to say, but failed to do. Guess the key issue here (as well as in my comment) is IMPACT (or lack thereof...:))
Cheers,
Hugo

Thanks for your comments and time spent Hugo - its highly appreciated. I think you've touched on the main "problem" with the photo and that in my opinion, looking at it again, is IMPACT. One of my personal aims in photography is to be able to transfer the emotions and feelings I had when taking the shot to the viewer. In this case it was only partly successful. I think I've succeeded to transfer the inherent beauty of the fern, rock and water onto the canvas but not the emotion/feelings I had when stumbling upon it after being hot after a long walk, bending down to drink the cool water. It was overcast, within an overgrown mountain stream with even, filtered lighting - the result was the bit mooted colours. I tried to add some impact by increasing the contrast and brightness a bit but it did not really do the trick. (now how's that for critiquing your own phot!) take care and thanks again

Hi Joggie, You're sure make it difficult to say something meaningful or constructive about this photo, as there's very little, if not nothing to nitpick about. I' all comes down to subjectivity and personal liking....
I don't think it's the best photo I've seen from you, as the composition, although well balanced, could, IMO, be a bit more challenging. As to the subject, I could argue that the only way to improve on it would be if there was something out of the usual to see, if only it were some interesting shadows.. Then one could argue the DOF, which makes the further removed rocks look a bit out of focus, but as I said, that's all way too subjective, and foremost marginal things.
It's a very good shot, and a rather technical one where composition, subject and appeal are concerned, and for some it ticks, for others it doesn't...
Reading back on my comment, that might be the only thing I really might offer as a critique: I don't think it really jumps out of the crowd, because it's rather nondescript. That, of course, does not apply to the technical merits of this photo, which are as usual top notch. Hope this makes sense, I find it rather difficult to put into words without sounding negative - it's by no means meant that way.
Cheers,
Hugo
