The design on her forehead is painted with sandal. This design is also painted on the groom's face.
Here red colour is also used alongwith sandal and tiny stones and golden dust are pasted inbetween.

Yes its sounds funny.
In India most of the marriages are arranged. Hence just on the eve of the marriage the bride looks a bit tense and serious. The rituals starts at the early hours in the morning and the bride fasts till the marriage is completed late at the night. So physical hazard make their a bit sad and tired. (Just see her other pic in my portfolio) This is most of the cases, not in general. We make them posed with a smile.
Particularly this beautiful model was so serious and camera shy that among 379 of her candid potraits, I got only 4 smiling faces.
Hence for me its not so freeflowing.
