Thank you for your comment Eb. The orientation of the flowers appears here as shot. I've also tried landscape orientation in poist processing and it works that way also, as you suggest. (Actually my wife requested a landscape version of this for her computer wallpaper!)
As to ASA/ISO 1600, I am continually amazed at how little this high ISO effects the image saturation and contrast in my DSLR (Canon Rebel 350D). In low light the effect is more noticable. I also use noise reduction software that has a remarkable ability to remove much noise w/o sacrificing much sharpness at all. It happens that in this particular shooting situation a much lower ISO would have been possible (and advisable), but I had just come out of a low light shoooting situation and neglected to adjust the ISO. It's entirely possible that the high ISO setting has something to do with the "watercolor" look of this shot, though as memory serves it's a pretty faithful representation of these beautiful blossoms.
Thanks again for your comments!
Best regards, Mark

I am glad that you got the intented effect here, Mark. I surmise that shooting at ASA 1600 would also have reduced contrast and saturation - at least it would in my camera. There are many ways to crop this and feel that it would also work well as a horizontal composition. Nicely done! Eb

Thanks for your helpful comment, Yahya. I agree that this shot looks like it has been worked over in Photoshop with some sort of watercolor or other effect. Amazing that I did very little work on this in Photoshop. The flowers just looked this way!
On the cropping, I think your insight about the bright spots in the back ground is correct. I had considered cropping this shot so that all that is visible is the blossoms. In the end I decided that I would like to leave in some of the background for context. But thinking about it more now, I should have darkened the background in PS, which would have retained a background context while minimizing distraction.
Thanks for your interesting insight my good friend!
Mark

very nice indeed Mark. they look like if they were really drawn by photoshop effects, water color and so. the only distracting thing for my eye was the 2 over bright ereas at the background, and this is a minor. other than that it is a nice catch. well done my friend.
