Thanks Dave - yes, I took about 20 shots of which five are usable. These spiders dont often stand still and at this magnification it is extremely difficult to follow it and keep the focus on the crititcal features. It often happens that I take 10 or 15 shots and delete everyone because of that.

Wow, Joggie. Absolutely a facinating photograph. You are inspiring me toward macro, that is for sure.
Do you take several rapid shots during something like this? I would assume he is moving and it must be difficult to catch the perfect focus.

I love spiders, Joggie, and this is a great spider shot. The composition is just right and the spider's blacks, greys, tans, and browns are perfectly enhanced by the soft green of the leaf. One thing that I find really interesting is that the spider almost appears to be floating above the leaf. It gives the photo a sense of action that's really nice.

Thanks Hugo - and dont worry, you can tell it as you see it, I will not take it wrongly (have a very thick skin!). For interest sake compare the shadows and level of harshness in this shot with that of the drops of water in my "To the point" upload. The distance was the same but the harsh lighting gives me the desired effect on the water drops, although the shadows on the leaf blade is quite pronounced. Take care.

Hi Joggie, thanks, that explains a lot! Just to make sure, I wasn't arguing the genuinity of this photo, just venting my curiosity... Should've known the effects of a macro converter hooked up to a macro lens on the DoF... And like wise; thanks for making me think!

Hi Hugo - thanks again for the detailed comment. Much appreciated. One thing for sure - you never failto make me think! Reading your remark I would like to clarify it a bit. This monster is about 7 mm in length (head to tail). You will notice that I used a quite low angle to create an ant's eye viewpoint. The second aspect to notice is that the spider does not stand with its body flat on the leaf surface but is raised about 1mm. The magnification ratio is about 3.89 x lifesize (3.89 to 1). Now for that to happen the flash was about 10cm away from the spider and as low as I could get it. The flash iluminated everything including the leaf underneath. If you look closely you will see the faint shadows running backwards from the front legs. No shadows were removed in PS - actually very little was done in PS. Regarding the DoF - this is the max I could sueeze out at that magnification and close distance. I would love to get more! Kind regards.

Hi Joggie, Compared to your other usually flawless shots, I'm a bit more reserved about this one. (yet compared to most other macro photos, it's still top of the bill)
The thing that strikes me as odd is the complete lack of shadows, yet all glistening parts ofthis spider reveal quite a heavy flash intensity. I know that's one of the benefits of a ring flash, but the spider seems to be suspended in mid air over the leaf! Also, the DOF is rather shallow, and the selective focus on the primary subject is not something I notice often in your photos. (not necessarily a bad thing, it just strikes me as "out of character", that's all)
Yet, the parts in focus show a tremendous level of details, I can almost count the hairs, and even the chlorophyll bits in the leaf....:) Yet, I have no clue as to the size of this monster...
Combined, thing that strikes me is that considering the details in the leaf, I'm lead to believe this spider is fairly small, yet looking at the hairy spider, I get the impression it's at least a couple of centimeters big. That, as well as the absence of a shadow give this photo a somewhat unreal feel....
