How ya goin' jason!
Yes... makes sense! (had to read it twice ;) )
Thank you very much!!
I agree with you and Mr Scholz.. I'd like to try for a 'powerful' panoramic crop. What I think is going to make it work, is going to this thing they call... "the Sun". Something I can't wait to see again. Even more so, light up this freakin bridge at sunset on my home from work again!
Keeping all these notes with me for tomorrow!

Nice work master Joel :) however i think the option provided by Mr Scholz is more powerful. I think the panoramic style crop is easier on the eye in terms of finding a place for them to rest.
I like the juxtaposition of the mountains and the straight lines of the massive structure, which the pano style highlights very well.
does that make sense because i think i have confused myself :(
all the best mate :)

Joel:
You should listen to your wife. Crop. Can't wait to see a shot from this location when a T-Storm is rolling in. Dramatic clouds or a lightning strike will set this off. Especially the last 6 minutes before the sun hits the horizon.

Ya know what's funny... when I do it, I don't like it, when someone else does it for you... looks great! For me, I love seeing that grand south tower reaching up, but this works.
One of the reasons that I'm just not going to let this bridge broject die, is that my wife (very creative artist/photographer) said that bridge pictures just don't do it for her. So, this project is not going to go away till I find my groove with taking bridge pictures! The defiant photographer!
Markus.. thanks so much for your feedback, and tame taken to crop the image!
...a re-shoot today, as the sun is going to be out for the first time in weeks!

Hi Markus, very good suggestion. I think its a very good way to solve the narrow margin on top and bottom of the photo compared to the right side, as it introduces a much more powerful horizontal orientation of the photo. Unusual composition, but I think it might just work... The more is less principle is well applied, as it does still suggests at the things that happen outside the image. Maybe you could even take this concept further by cropping off the base of the bridge head?
Very interesting discussion...
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi, Joel. I have read these many comments and can't resist to add another version which I think could be an option. Why not make a panoramic in a similar way I attached? It would also relieve a bit from the little tilt the original has. Thank you also for your very kind comment on my Kaiser.

Hi Joel!
Me too love bridges.... :) It´s really a fascinating bridge and i hope to see it ive some day. Me too did know it´s not golden, never thought. In all movies and photo´s it´s always this special red. I do have to agree with Hugo here about both the colour of the clous and sky and also the think the composition is "weak" - you can do much better Joel!!
Kind regards, Jeanette

Not worse Elisa.. different ;)
I like wha tyou did. I fyou had the full bit dpeth working with you, it would less posterized. This poor image has been beaten and robbed by me last night, so you gave a good face lift! Thanks!
What i learned was, that I was hanging on to that golden sunset so much, that I forgot that only *I* knew it was gold!
I'm going to stop by there tomorrow and shoot some more. Of the 40+ images from yesterday, this being the only somewhat good one... I need to go back. Every image was a lesson.
thanks for the honest comments, and color tweak!

Hi Joel. I´ve seen the b&w version, but this one works better for me. What bothers me is the compo being pretty centered. I´d like to keep the bright clouds on the right, though. What do you think of the attached crop? I think it´s worse :)

thank you so much Peta!
Yeah! no lens will compare once you get use to it attched to your camera. It aint' a light weight lens, but it so nice to use! Have fun with it Peta, and enjoy Seattle!
I'll be the first to tell you.... sorry for all the rain. It's not always like this! When you drive past the SF Presidio, and someone points out Lucasfilm, wave!
Have a good time! Try and head north to Marin and Sonoma... it's like Italy up here!
cheers and congrats on your new lens! -joel

Thanks Hugo!
I didn't bend the hue, and that's a very good idea. I shy away from masking (reminds me too much of my day job;) )...but in this case, it would help a great deal. What I did do, was lots of channel mixing, and curves. You're so right... a hue fix on the clouds to cool them down...avoid the green.
As gloomy as the image is.. I gotta' hit it on a day when the clouds look as "Maxwell Parrish" as they do way off in the distance in this image on the lower right. The image lacks balance with the foggy rain clouds. Sorry... I didn't mean to be a 'color of the bridge know it all' ;) ...i appreciate your eye very much on my images!
yes... tough call w/ the wide angle lens aimed at a bridge.. it cuts that fine line w/ scale.
..always listen to the wife.. ;)
cheers, and thanks again Hugo!

Hi Joel....
The first lesson I've learned is to ALWAYS listen to the wife...:)
On a more serious note, I know the GGB is rusty red, seen so many photos and such, that distinct tone is pretty much embedded in my brain. I was referring to the tone of the clouds, which look a bit smudgy. Your explanation does help in assessing the origin of that smugdiness, though.
If you already pulled as much yellow out as possible, maybe changing the hue a bit would work, although that would probably make it too green again.... And in order to leave the tone of the GGB untouched, that would require some masking and desaturating the yellow hues, but I'm sure that's what you did.
a 17mm lens would probably do the trick, I agree. I believe this spot / PoV is quite famous for its vista on the bridge, and any wider would only reduce the overwhelming size of the structure.. Perhaps a portrait format would also work with the 24mm...
Looking forward to the retake!
Cheers,
Hugo

Ron,
you're a funny guy. It may have been this exact picture, that I was thinking, I wonder if there is something I can do set Ron off with this image. ;)
Yup.. the bridge is rusty red. It's pretty dirty these days. I guess it takes *forever* to paint it. I bet if it stopps raining for a freakin week, they'll touch it up a bit. In the mean time, we all get pictures of a rusty old bridge.
Thanks again! ..i'll try and get a doll head in on the next one... just for you.

Thank you Petal!
Ya know, I had just said in my reply to Hugo, that the color of the bridge on a foggy, rainy day, with the sun ina slight glow, give lights the bridge up in it's natural color... rusy red! It was raining..guess I should of mentioned that. I was *running* to catch the view, and the ship!!! I was so bummed when it left the gate, because it was the coolest looking cargo ship... it was powder blue with lots of yellow and red containers. I screwed up Petal... *stoopid stoopid!* :)
But yes.. you and Hugo are correct.. something funny with the color, and that's possibly due to the hazy day that it was. I tried my best to save the color, pull yellow, and contrast it as much as possible w/o it looking like a bad painting. ..instead... i made a bad photo ;)
Tonight... since I'm clearly struggling for time and images to meet my 4 a day quota.. I'll take a crack at this one again..and go for that hard tone B/W image! That'll be fun!
Thanks again Petal for the honest comments! Much appreciated as always!
best, -Joel

Howdy Hugo,
Thanks for the comments!
I hear ya on the color tone, and that brings up an interesting topic that I'll mention to Petal as well. This *is* the color of the bridge! It's crazy! Even as a child when I first moved here, I was stunned by the fact that the bridge is not gold. It's a rusty red.
I did pull as much yellow as possible out of the reds, but looking at it now on my work monitor, it does look juicy against the sky. I guess another factor in the image, is that it was raining. Hard to tell I guess. The sun was not out, as in *out*, more of a glow through the clouds. First time we've seen blue sky in weeks!
I had a struggle with the free area on the right also. Good call. My wife had suggested a tighter crop as well, and I should of listened! doh!
I'm going to head back to this same location w/ a 17mm, and get *the* shot...with your comments in mind :) I think my 24mm was a bit long from where I was standing.
thanks again Hugo!
cheers, -Joel

I just love the shot. We have seen many and almost all are converted to B&W. I didn't know that the bridge was red/rust coloured. I like the way it starts out so strong and huge on the left and takes us into the picture. Lots of nice elements here. Well done. Nicer than shooting puppet heads.

Great view on/of a great bridge... and I do like bridges... Hope to see this 'live' one day... I'll start saving right after the trip to OZ... ;-D!! Love the angle and the composition (maybe including the whole ship instead of just that wisp of blue smoke would've been nice...), but have to agree with Hugo: there's something 'funny' going on with the colors... they're not 'crisp' but a bit hazy/dirty greyish... and I never would've guessed that the sun was shining... seeing this I'd be running for cover... ;-D I've tried to convert it to B&W just to have a look, but then the whole image gets to 'flat'/grey... maybe you can fiddle with the original!! BTW B&W really gives that 50's feel IMO.. ;-D Have a great day and make this 'detour' more often... who knows what great shots it'll render...

Hi Joel,
Very good, classic vista; I'd love to see this live some day...
Somehow, the tones in this photo look a bit smudgy, if you see what I mean; Not really sure what causes this feel, though. Maybe a tad too much on the yellow levels?
Another thing is the rather close composition on top and below the bridge; nothing wrong with that, yet it stands out compared to the larger "free" area on the right.
It all makes me feel a bit ambiguous about this photo; the scene is great, but a few things prevent me from fully appreciating it...
Cheers,
Hugo
