Hi Gary,

I think it's a bit of both; the focus of the MZ-5 is not only slow and noisy, but I'm not too fond of it's sharpness either. Another thing might be the loss of details and sharpness during scanning, and then there is the postprocessing, which I still find rather troublesome at times, especially as I feel Usefilm changes the image after uploading (reduced saturation, and in comparing my photos after downloading from site to the original file I uploaded, the downloaded file also shows more artefacts and distortion) Sharpening is a useful tool, but also quite dangerous, as it's easily overdone (talking from experience...;)) and I don't think it would fix everything.

In all fairness, I never actually paid much attention to it, nor really noticed the difference until I switched to Nikon. I did make that switch as I wanted a DSLR, and after looking into the Ist*D, and taking it for a spin, I thought it felt too plastic and I just didn't like the feel of the camera.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo. Thanks for the in depth comment. So tell, me, do you think it's the focusing of the camera itself or the lens or maybe both that seem to cause a bit of "softness"? I did not want to go totally digital so soon after buying my last camera (other than to have a very small point-and-shoot cam). But maybe I should look at going totally digital? Or should I just learn how to use PS to sharpen images??

And yes, you really should pop in for a visit to our amazing Rockies!! The mtns just west of Calgary were the first "real" mountains I ever saw (only about 3 hrs from here) and I have always found the Rockies to be some of the most amazing mountains around. Lots of variety and very accessible.

Cheers, Gary

A breathtaking view of these mountians. The lavender and the small band of sunlight in the middle is very daramatic. You even have seemed to captured a small cloud in the front. Very nice.

Hi Gary, Spectacular lighting! I really like your mountain views, showing the ruggedness of the Rockies. The more you show us, the faster the Rockies climb on my "places to visit" list... Very spectacular sight.

Maybe the image quality could've been a tad better, but I think the camera lens combination is also to blame. I used to have the MZ-5 in combination with the Pentax 100-300, but I've never been very satisfied with either. It's one of the reasons I changed brands...

Keeping this in mind, and trying to remember the poor image quality I managed to get out of that camera, I think you did a decent job, though. The lighing situation is rather difficult, and the metering of the pentax just isn't up to those situations. Besides, none of these critiques affects the pure beauty of this photo... It's just breathtaking!

Cheers.

Hugo
