If any of your climbing partners "lead", it typically makes for a more exciting image. I do like the crop and this photo in B&W a lot better than the original.

Alessandro, thank you very much for you advice! I just got enough gear to be able to try that approach. Next time I have the opportunity to go climbing (it's cold!) I will try and do that off my own rope next to the other climbers.

Shot in climb area is not easy, so your work is good; but if you want obtain the maximun in climbing image don't shot in front of the wall because 90% of pics would result flat.You can shot remaing in front of the wall only when the scene is particulary dinamic. If you can find a side position, so you can include wall, man who climb and landscape. Belay yourself and your camera and shot.Bye Alex.

This was the original photo as is. No PS or anything done to it. On the posted one I cropped it and sharpened it, and turned it black and white. This was mid day so the lighting was very harsh, and we were down in a canyon with out a way for me to move up to his level. I took a few from above, but the dof wasn't good and since I was shooting into a dark canyon the detail wasn't good at all. My daughter will soon (next week) be starting preschool. Whent that happens I'll have two days a week to work on my photography again. I'll start recording the settings and lighting used on my new photos. I should be able to get better help then. Thanks :)

If you could post your tech data it might help in figuring out where to help you. This shot seems to have a lot of grain. I'm not sure if its from the film or if you have enlarged it so with the scanner. Your highlights or the right seem a little hard. So maybe a filter such as a yellow or orange could help here on the b&W film. I like the subject matter here, just work on the lighting a little more, and unless you are going after the effect of a grainy shot, most like a finer grain film.(6)
