About	Around 1740, nineteen mills were built at Kinderdijk to drain the excess water from the Alblasserwaard polders. Nowadays, the job is done by a modern water screw pumping-station. In 1997 the mills of Kinderdijk were put on the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
