Hi Mary Sue,
Thanks so much for your comments on my Pumpkin Pose shot with my new son... life has become chaotic in a good way, and I am trying to capture as much of it on film that I can!

This shot has a lot of dynamic power to me... the colours pop, the contrasts of oranges and greens are wonderful and the lighting is perfect. Was this shot outdoors, or indoors? The foliage in the bg is great because it's not uniformly green... there are darker and lighter spots throughout which make it seem so natural.

I love your images of flowers especially. I hope you don't object to my "friendifying" you, but it'll make my looking at your photos easier!

Lovely Mary Sue. Since you want a critique on this...

What can I think of to help this image into the stratosphere?

I'm useless... not a damn thing. I love it. Maybe the background color? I dunno... I like it as is. :-)

Someday I may post again. (Actually, I did today... ;-) )

Hi Mary Sue,

I think Narabia's comment strikes gold; it mentions the heart of the issue. Wish I could add something to that, but I just know too little about shooting florals. And the things I feel I can comment on are old news by now.... Yet, this image grabbed my attention, floral or not, it's a good shot, and a very appealing one.

Cheers,

Hugo

Pretty! And well titled too. I like the close perspective and the lighting.

Narabia, I quite agree with your observation about the lack of symmetry here. I considered placing the camera at various angles, but didn't really use the crop to change the perspective. One possibility would be to shoot it at a dramatic angle so that it was obviously askew.

I also struggled with the edge of blown light. I couldn't decide whether I liked it (it reminds me of the sun's first rays over the horizon) or if it was just a big glaring error. I appreciate your feedback that it didn't work so well for you. In the original, that blown strip is not quite so dominant. Perhaps the levels adjustment brought out the highlights so that they were too much.

I've been in a photographic slump lately and am trying to push myself back into the groove. Thanks very much for the help!

A flower in Critiquer's Corner. I feel obliged to comment as I expect the others also to critique my photos put to CC.

First ... what I like.
I love the overall softness of the image, the smooth lighting through the petals. I like that you shown the structure of petals and of course I love shallow DOF that gives the image delicate look.

Secondly ... what I would prefer be different.
I feel a lack of symmetry. Yes, flowers are not symmetric but you chose such crop (central, vertical line, two cut petals on the sides), if so... then the symmetry here is not perfect. The crop should be tilt a bit or may be not tha close.
One could compalin also about the blown light on the middle petal. I take photos of flowers and I know that sometimes it is not possible to eliminate reflections of sun/light on petals due to their wax nature.

Well, the gold reflector did it's work perfect, so you gain warm colors, and the shadows of petals are very good now,
the DOF is a little complicated, I can't distinct between sharpness and blury part of image, it would be a great technique too, but I'm not familiar to this technique.
very well done and great Work,
Wish you luck
Mohammad
